    Project Details

The St George Hospital Stage 2 Redevelopment involved the construction of a new seven-level Acute Services Building on top of the existing operational 24-hour emergency department. This $227 million project features a nine-level Acute Services Building incorporating a 52-bed intensive care unit and high dependency unit, cardiac catheterisation unit, eight operating theatres, 128 inpatient beds, and a rooftop helipad. The complex construction sequence required waterproofing solutions capable of protecting critical healthcare infrastructure while maintaining continuous emergency department operations below the new tower.

To meet the highest performance and sustainability standards, the project focused on:

    • Delivering reliable waterproofing protection for construction above an operational 24-hour emergency department without disrupting critical healthcare services
    • Providing low-VOC, environmentally responsible systems suitable for sensitive healthcare environments including intensive care units and operating theatres
    • Ensuring long-term durability for specialised applications including rooftop helipad surfaces subject to extreme loading and weather exposure
    Envirosystems Solution

Envirosystems was specified for the St George Hospital Stage 2 Redevelopment, delivering waterproofing solutions across the complex seven-level construction above the operational emergency department. The specification addressed diverse healthcare applications including the intensive care unit, high dependency unit, cardiac catheterisation unit, operating theatres, inpatient areas and the rooftop helipad.

The Envirosystems products provided reliable, environmentally responsible waterproofing protection suited to the demanding requirements of acute care infrastructure. The systems ensured appropriate performance standards for sensitive medical environments while supporting the hospital’s continued emergency operations throughout the challenging construction sequence, contributing to the successful delivery of expanded healthcare capacity for the St George community.

The 14-level hospital at Westmead serves as the centrepiece of the New South Wales Government’s $1 billion-plus Westmead Redevelopment. Designed by HDR Rice Daubney, this comprehensive healthcare facility features two new emergency departments – one for adults and one for children with dedicated entry points, 20 new operating and interventional suites with highly specialised technology and equipment, a new Cardiac Comprehensive Care Centre, over 300 new patient rooms, and extensive education, training and research areas and facilities. The scale and complexity of this landmark healthcare project demanded waterproofing solutions capable of meeting stringent hospital standards across diverse applications.

To meet the highest performance and sustainability standards, the project focused on:

    • Delivering reliable below-grade waterproofing protection for lift pits and basement structures supporting critical healthcare infrastructure
    • Providing vapour-permeable membrane systems with excellent freeze-thaw durability suited to long-term healthcare facility requirements
    • Ensuring high-quality, flexible waterproofing with outstanding adhesion properties for concrete, masonry and natural stone substrates throughout the complex
    Envirosystems Solution

Envirosystems Hydrostatic 1 solution was installed during the early works stage to the lift pits at Westmead Hospital. Based on advanced cross-linking polymer technology, Enviro Hydrostatic 1 is a single-component flexible polymer-modified cementitious membrane. The addition of water to the Hydrostatic 1 powder forms a high-quality liquid membrane system designed for application over concrete, masonry and natural stone substrates.

The cured film provides a watertight membrane that remains permeable to vapour diffusion, offering excellent freeze-thaw durability and outstanding adhesion properties essential for below-grade applications. This system proved ideally suited to the demanding requirements of the Westmead Hospital Redevelopment, providing reliable waterproofing protection for critical infrastructure supporting the 14-level healthcare facility and its specialised medical services.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge stands as one of the world’s most iconic structures, with a 2km conjoined cycle and pathway spanning both sides of the bridge to link Sydney’s central business district with the Northern suburbs. This critical pedestrian and cycling infrastructure required comprehensive restoration work to address cracking and deterioration while maintaining public access to this heritage landmark. The project demanded high-performance waterproofing capable of protecting the structure while withstanding constant pedestrian and cyclist traffic in a highly exposed harbour environment.

To meet the highest performance and sustainability standards, the project focused on:

    • Delivering durable crack repair and waterproofing protection for deteriorated walkway and cycleway surfaces on a heritage-listed structure
    • Providing UV-resistant, trafficable systems capable of withstanding continuous pedestrian and cyclist traffic in exposed harbour conditions
    • Ensuring shortened construction periods to minimise disruption to this heavily utilised public infrastructure linking key Sydney precincts
    Envirosystems Solution

Envirosystems was contracted to repair and reinstate the cracked walkway and cycleway surfaces on the Sydney Harbour Bridge main deck, and to prepare and apply a UV-resistant trafficable waterproofing system to the exposed areas. The comprehensive specification detailed crack repair procedures, substrate preparation, priming and installation of the Envirosystems Trafficable Waterproofing Membrane System.

The Enviro Trafficable System represents an innovative solution within the Envirosystems product range, providing a hard-wearing, UV-stable waterproof membrane with inherent slip resistance. Capable of withstanding full vehicular traffic, the system proved uniquely suited to this external waterproofing application on an iconic landmark structure. The system’s performance characteristics enabled a shortened construction period, minimising disruption to the thousands of pedestrians and cyclists who traverse the bridge daily while delivering long-term protection for this heritage infrastructur
