FAQ - Waterproofing
What areas generally require waterproofing?Any area of a building where water can find a way into the structure should be waterproofed. Internal areas of a building that typically require waterproofing include; bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. External areas of a building that typically require waterproofing include; roof tops, basement walls, balconies, planter boxes, podiums, terraces, swimming pools, water features, water tanks, facades. When construction is under the water table, there is also a requirement to ensure that the structure is watertight.
What are suitable substrates for waterproofing?Generally, substrates include concrete, render, fibre cement sheeting, timber, and most masonry surfaces. With that in mind, the list of suitable substrates are not limited to the previously mentioned materials; the selection of an appropriate primer is the key to ensuring compatibility and sufficient adhesion. If your substrate falls outside the list of substrates mentioned, please feel free to contact Envirosystems for further recommendations.
Do I need to use a primer?Similar to painting, most products in the Envirosystems range require the use of a primer to seal the substrate and to promote optimum adhesion. If using a primer, it is recommended that you follow the priming instructions on the relevant product data sheet.
What is a bond breaker, and do I need to use one in my waterproofing system?Most structures experience a degree of movement, typically at junctions between floor/wall or wall/wall. To minimise the stress the membrane is exposed to, a bond breaker is used at these junction points prior to the waterproofing membrane application. The bond breaker then prevents the subsequent waterproofing membrane from ‘sticking’ when the membrane is applied over said bond breaker. In accordance with AS3740-2010, a bond breaker must be used at all horizontal/vertical interfaces and across all movement joints where the membrane is bonded to the substrate.
What if there is already existing waterproofing down?While it may be possible from time to time to waterproof over an existing membrane, it is strongly recommended that any previous membrane is removed in order to ensure the optimum performance of Envirosystems Products.
Do I need to be a licensed waterproofer to use these products?No. You can use the majority of our products at home without the need for a licensed waterproofer. However, we recommend that the relevant government regulations and Australian Standards are followed: AS 3740 – Internal Wet Areas AS 4654.2 – External Waterproofing Above Ground.
Are there specific products or situations when I would need a licensed waterproofer?Many of the Envirosystems are DIY friendly, however, we do recommend that you check with the relevant government body in the event that certification is required. If certification is required then a licenced waterproofing contractor will be needed.
While all our products are user-friendly, it is advised that a licensed waterproofer be utilised should there be a question of application ability. Additionally, we strongly recommend that you consult your local certifying body for situations that may require the waterproofing to be undertaken by a licensed professional.

FAQ - Adhesives
What is an adhesive?An adhesive is used to bond 2 surfaces together such as a tile to the substrate. Envirosystems offer a complete range of cementitious, epoxy and polyurethane adhesives to cover off most adhesion requirements.
What are suitable substrates for adhesives?Envirosystems offer adhesives that can adhere to most substrates including concrete, render, waterproofing membranes, timber, tiles, FC sheeting etc. For more information on which type of adhesive would be suitable for your project, please contact Envirosystems.
When and where would an adhesive need to be used?Adhesives can be used whenever there is a need to bond two surfaces/substrates together. Within the building and construction industry, the possibilities are endless with regards to what can be adhered to each other.
Some examples of adhesives with the Envirosystems range include GTX and GTX tiles adhesives which can be used to adhere tiles to the Envirosystems range of waterproofing membranes, Enviro Flex FC which can be used to adhere angles to the floors of internal wet areas (prior to waterproofing) and Enviro Epoxy B-NS when a premium adhesive solution is required.
What is the best adhesive to use when tiling to a solvent based polyurethane such as Enviro 700X?Enviro GTX can be used when adhering tiles directly to Enviro 700X. The addition of Enviro STX into the GTX is recommended to promote premium adhesion.
What is the best adhesive to use when tiling to a solvent based polyurethane such as Enviro HP1200?Enviro GTX can be used when adhering tiles directly to Enviro HP1200. The addition of Enviro STX (liquid additive) into the GTX is recommended as well as Enviro Prime GT to promote premium adhesion.
FAQ - Primers
Why do I need to use a primer?A primer should be applied to the substrate prior to overcoating with products such as waterproofing and epoxy flooring. There are 2 main reasons to prime 1. to seal the substrate, thus preventing pinhole-ing in the subsequent coat and 2. to promote adhesion of the subsequent coating.

FAQ - Sealants
What is a sealant?A sealant is a product used to seal either:
- The surface of a substrate to improve its serviceability, for example, to prevent excessive water ingress or to dust proof a surface.
- Seal a joint in building components.
What types of sealants are stocked within the Envirosystems range?Envirosystems stocks surface sealants, penetrating sealants and joint sealants.
What is the difference between a surface sealant, penetrating sealant and a joint sealant?A surface sealant, as the name suggests, is typically applied to the surface of a substrate to increase serviceability or improve aesthetics. They work by forming a thin film over the substrate, creating a hard wearing, UV stable, dust proof layer that prevents the excessive ingress of water into a substrate while reducing surface wear at the same time.
A penetrating sealant works by penetrating into the pores of a cementitious or natural stone substrate, to fill the voids with a silicone based compound. This results in a reduction in the absorption capacity of a material, improving its durability and serviceability without altering its aesthetic appearance.
A joint sealant is a flexible polymer mastic (Polyurethane or Polyurea) that is typically used to seal joints where there is anticipated to be a moderate degree of differential substrate movement.
What type of surfaces are suitable for a sealant application?Surface sealants and penetrating sealants can be applied over a variety of porous substrates, but are most commonly applied over cementitious and natural stone substrates.
Joint sealants are able to be applied over a variety of substrates, including concrete, masonry, fibre cement sheet, metal, and timber. Please consult Envirosystems for alternate substrate compatibility.

What is a coating system?A coating system is a product or combination of products applied over a substrate, to improve its serviceability, durability and overall performance. Often and depending on products being used, this coating will create an impermeable layer to the applied substrate.
Where and why are coatings needed?Coatings are an essential component of any construction project, they are used in a variety of applications to encapsulate a substrate to improve its serviceability, durability and overall performance. Envirosystems manufacture, and supply a range of coatings that are used for; facades, rooftops, floors and parapet walls.
Do the Envirosystems range of coatings come in different colours?Envirosystems coating products are available in a range of standards colours, as per the details on their respective Product Data Sheet. Can these products be used across residential, industrial and commercial spaces?Envirosystems manufactures a range of flooring products suitable for use in a variety of applications, our products can be used in residential, commercial and industrial environments.
We have a long list of case histories, ranging from; large warehouse spaces, car showrooms, medical facilities, commercial kitchens and aerospace & aviation operations and maintenance facilities.
Do I need a licensed contractor to use the Envirosystems flooring products?Whilst Envirosystems range of flooring products are DIY friendly, it is advised that an experienced licensed contractor be used where there is a question of application ability. Our flooring products often require a high attention to detail during application, to ensure that an aesthetically pleasing finish is achieved.

FAQ - Remedial
What generally causes a waterproofing system to fail?There are many reasons why a waterproofing system may fail, in our experience the most common cause of a system failure is due to:
- Incorrect product specification; using the wrong product in the wrong environment.
- Incorrect application methodology; where the product is not applied in accordance with the product datasheet and relevant governing standards.
- Poor substrate preparation; where the product fails due to poor preparation and workmanship.
How can Envirosystems remedial products help solve these problems?Envirosystems range of remedial products has been specifically designed to work in the toughest environments with no compromise on performance, giving you the confidence that Envirosystems products will resolve the issue once and for all.
Our range of remedial products includes; moisture tolerant primers, hydrophilic and hydrophobic injection resins, high-performance repair mortars and elastomeric waterproofing membranes.
Will I need a licensed contractor to carry out remedial works?Whilst our products are DIY friendly, Envirosystems strongly recommends that a licensed contractor is used, due to the highly technical nature of remedial works. This will ensure that your job is done right, without the need for additional remediation.
